Is Your Shampoo Cleaning Your Hair and Scalp or Harming It?

As a hairdresser by trade, I’m fussy what goes on my hair because it’s so long, use something that isn’t good and takes days to get back in check again. Using something free from harsh chemicals, detergents, phthalates, carcinogens, synthetic fragrances is good for me, my skin, my hair, my body and the environment

Shampoo is an important part of our personal hygiene. Who doesn’t want a clean, smooth, healthy-looking, right? But getting that by damaging our hair, scalp and the environment further isn’t necessary any more. So many people aren’t aware that this common hair care product may contain ingredients that could be harming their health. Most of the time, we choose a certain type of shampoo based on four things

1. Cost

2. Brand

3. Perceived Effectiveness

4. Fragrance

Being Vegan and Gluten Free now for over 4 years, you change over your Eating and Drinking habits, then you start looking at the other products you are putting ON your skin. Beauty and Health radiates from the inside out, but if what you are putting on the outside is just as bad then you are stopping yourself from reaching maximum benefit, not to mention looking at how the products are tested and where they have come from. A number of consumers are now reading the ingredients on hair and skin bottles and basing their purchasing decisions on safety. Turns out almost all commercial shampoos and conditioners are full of chemicals that’ll destroy the health of your scalp and hair.

Is Your Shampoo Cleaning Your Hair and Scalp or Harming It? Blog Post katrinaGelderbloem.com 2

But do you really know what is in your hair Products?

Shampoos are generally made by combining a surfactant, most often sodium lauryl sulfate (or sodium laureth sulfate), with a co-surfactant, most often cocamidopropyl betaine in water to form a thick, viscous liquid. But some of the ingredients that are commonly used are harsh chemicals that have been shown to be potentially harmful to human health, either individually or in combination with other ingredients. May pose various health risks ranging from skin conditions to cancer. This is becoming alarming that so many products on the market are like this and we don’t really bat an eye lid.

EWG Info

Skin is a Carrier not a Barrier. It’s your largest organ and one of the most important thing when you put something on your skin it is a pathway to your body.

Is Your Shampoo Cleaning Your Hair and Scalp or Harming It? Blog Post katrinaGelderbloem.com 7

This fact may cause a shock for all of us. We never expected that the product we thought to be an essential part of our personal hygiene can be a source of harmful, toxic. Even carcinogenic compounds. Many of these products are claimed to be safe by a lot of companies, unfortunately, we can at least say, that human health is not entirely their top priority.

There is now a growing trend that sees companies creating safer personal care products. Some manufacturers are now eventually getting the message from consumers to have a safer pool of personal care products. Take a look at your daily products today and see what is actually in them

Stressed? Headaches? Tired? Here’s the Surprising Reason You Might Be

Stressed? Headaches? Tired? Here’s the Surprising Reason You Might Be

Water—it is essential to life and well being. Without it, or with suboptimal levels of it, you won’t function properly. While dehydration can occur any time of the year, most people are more aware of it during the hot summer months.

Your body is the perfect indicator, giving signs that you need to increase your water intake to keep you healthy and strong. But some symptoms are less obvious than others, so here’s a compiled list to help keep you hydrated.

Stressed? Headaches? Here_s the Surprising Reason You Might Not Be Feeling Well Blog katrinagelderbloem.com.003

Dry skin. As your body’s largest organ, skin is a great way to gauge your water intake. In fact, some of the earliest indicators of dehydration present themselves on your skin. When you don’t have enough water in your body, you stop sweating. When you don’t sweat, your skin begins to dry, which can all happen rather quickly, so use this to your advantage and grab some more water.

Dry eyes. Just like your skin, when you don’t drink enough water, your eyes will start to dry out. Severe dehydration can also impede your ability to produce tears, which leads to dry, red, burning eyes.

Stressed? Headaches? Here_s the Surprising Reason You Might Not Be Feeling Well Blog katrinagelderbloem.com.005

Joint pain. Your joints also suffer when your water intake is inadequate. Materials such as cartilage and ligaments are roughly 88% liquid, and water helps naturally lubricate joints to keep you moving effortlessly and pain-free. If you don’t have enough water in your system, your joints can become painful with movement.

Fatigued and lethargic. When dehydrated, your body will actually start to slow down in order to conserve precious resources. Water acts as your body’s fuel, and when you’re starting to run low, you will experience sleepiness and fatigue.

Stressed? Headaches? Here_s the Surprising Reason You Might Not Be Feeling Well Blog katrinagelderbloem.com.007

Decreased urine output. The average person should be visiting the restroom 4-7 times a day minimally. If you aren’t, you’re more than likely dehydrated. Also, urine color is a good indicator; the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.

Headaches. A headache, especially a lasting or recurring one, can indicate inadequate water consumption, particularly when combined with one or more of the other symptoms of dehydration.

Stressed? Headaches? Here_s the Surprising Reason You Might Not Be Feeling Well Blog katrinagelderbloem.com.004

Hunger. Most people don’t realize that hunger pain can actually signal a need for water, not necessarily a need for food. Your body will try to tell you as gently as possible when it needs more water, and sometimes it does so by increasing your hunger. Try sipping water before reaching for a snack.

Lackluster workouts. We’ve all been there: the workout sessions that seem to drag on, the yoga poses that are suddenly impossible, the weights you can’t lift even though you just did the week before. Your body, including every muscle, tendon, ligament, and blood cell, run off of water. You can’t operate at maximum capacity without it and your exercise regimen will suffer because of it.

Stressed? Headaches? Here_s the Surprising Reason You Might Not Be Feeling Well Blog katrinagelderbloem.com.006

Stressed. Surprisingly, dehydration can actually increase stress hormone output. In fact, some experts believe that dehydration is one of the main causes of stress to begin with. Even a mild dehydration of 2-4% can raise cortisol levels, which is one of the body’s key stress hormones.

Next time you’re feeling even one of these symptoms, think about reaching for a drink as your first line of defence. Tired of plain, boring water? Try some of these great infusion recipes!-10 Fruit Detox Waters for your Hair, Nails & Skin Be happy, healthy, and hydrated.

Blueberries for your Hair

Blueberries help to stimulate the growth of hair due to the presence of the chemicals proanthocyanidins. Being an abundant source of Vitamin B and proanthocyanidins, they are extremely beneficial for hair.

Hair is composed of dead cells called keratin. Hair growth occurs when the dead cells are pushed out by the hair follicles because of the production of new cells. It occurs in three stages – growth or anagen, cessation or catagen, and rest or telogen. Proanthocyanidins, chemicals found in blueberries, stimulate hair growth by accelerating the transition from telogen to anagen.

Blueberries for your Nails

Like hair, nails start in the nail root, hidden under the cuticle. When cells at the root of the nail start to grow, the new nail cells push out the old nail cells. These old cells then flatten and harden, thanks to keratin, a protein made by these cells the newly formed nail then slides along the nail bed giving you the flat surface under your nails.

Giving your blood stream the very best ingredients to produce the keratin is key to great Hair & Nail health. Look at different ways of adding some into your daily routine.

Blueberries for your Skin

The presence of free radicals in the skin can cause severe skin damage. It can cause early signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, dry skin, and age spots. The appearance of varicose veins and spider veins are other signs associated with ageing. Varicose and spider veins are dilated blood vessels that are close enough to the skin to be visible. The skin may look splotchy due to weakened vessel walls.

Ingesting blueberries helps in reversing the signs of ageing. A superfood, blueberries are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that inhibit the oxidization of other molecules. Oxidization is the loss of electrons in a molecule, which results in the production of free radicals. They can damage, or even destroy, cells completely. Antioxidants react with free radicals and prevent them from causing damage. A cup of wild blueberries has up to 13,427 antioxidants, including Vitamin A and C, as well as flavonoids

Top City Destinations – Venice, Italy.

Fall in Love Katrina Gelderbloem at Health in your Home

Travel is Good for your Health

Venice is always rated in the Top 50 City destinations in the world to visit. Many ranking it as No1.

So what is it that Venice has that makes it so appealing?

Venice is the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region and is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals. That alone is enough to blow your mind for sure.

The canals includes the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
